






Artist's Statement - Face of Crisis
So did you hear about Britney's collapse? And her little sister is pregnant. It's crazy, isn't it?
American media seems like a paradoxical blend of celebrity pop culture and world news. Popular perception of the world is undeniably shaped by the media as the source of information. Images of the underprivileged are mixed with images of the overprivileged: Paris Hilton, Darfur, Lindsey Lohan, Burma.
Some may reject American pop culture and its fascination with celebrities as frivolous, but is there a possibility that it serves some purpose in American culture overall? I believe that it could be the spoonful of sugar that helps us swallow the unimaginable tragedies that happen every day around the world. On a simpler level, it could at least provide a means for people to begin to connect with each other in conversation.
